Three-Letter Words: The Scrabble Player's Toolkit

Three wooden game tiles in a row on an oak board with more tiles blurred behind

Two-letter words open up a Scrabble board, but three-letter words are where a lot of the scoring happens. Our dictionary holds 965 valid three-letter words, and knowing the useful ones lets you play high-value tiles, clear awkward racks, and build off letters already on the board. Here are the ones worth learning.

Every word below is in our dictionary of about 168,000 English words. Scores are the Scrabble tile value, before any premium squares.

High-scoring three-letter words

These squeeze big points out of just three tiles:

WordPointsMeaning
WIZ15an expert
FEZ15a brimless hat
ZIP14to move fast
ZAP14to strike suddenly
BIZ14informal for business
FOX13the animal
JAY13the bird
JOY13great happiness
WAX13the substance
HEX13a curse

Vowel-dumpers

When your rack is clogged with vowels, these three-letter words are the escape hatch: YOU, ARE, OUR, OUT, USE, AIR, AGO, VIA, OIL, SEA, EYE, AID, DIE, ICE, EAT. Several use two or three vowels at once, so you can shed them and draw fresh tiles.

The Q, J, X and Z words

Three-letter words are the easiest way to play the game's hardest tiles. For Q: QAT, QUA, SUQ (two of them avoid needing a U). For J: JAB, JAM, JAR, JAW, JAY, JET, JIG, JOB, JOG, JOT, JOY, JUG and more. For X: FOX, FIX, FAX, HEX, LAX, MIX, SAX, SIX, TAX, VEX, WAX. For Z: ZAP, ZIP, ZIT, ZOO, ZED, FEZ, BIZ, WIZ. See our guide to short words with Z, X, J and Q for the full set with scores.

How three-letter words score so well

  • They fit anywhere. A crowded board rarely has room for a long word, but there is almost always a gap for three letters.
  • They play in two directions. Slot a three-letter word alongside an existing word and you often make two or three short words at once, scoring for all of them.
  • They take hooks. Many become longer words with one more letter: FOX to FOXY, JOY to JOYS, HE to HEX. Learning which letters hook on is a quiet source of points.

Learn them in small groups

Do not try to memorise all 965. Start with the high-value words above and the Q/Z ones, then add vowel-dumpers. To practise, type any rack into our Scrabble word finder and look at the three-letter results. For the shortest plays of all, see our 30 best two-letter words.
