Words With No Vowels

Every word needs a vowel sound, but not every word needs one of the vowel letters A, E, I, O or U. Plenty manage on Y instead (RHYTHM, CRYPT, NYMPH), and a rare few use no vowel letter at all. We pulled the complete list from our dictionary.

Words that use only Y as a vowel

In these words, Y does the job a vowel usually does. They are ordinary English words:

LengthWords
7 lettersRHYTHMS
6 lettersRHYTHM, GLYPHS, NYMPHS, SYNTHS
5 lettersCRYPT, GYPSY, GLYPH, HYMNS, LYMPH, LYNCH, MYRRH, MYTHS, NYMPH, PSYCH, PYGMY, SYNTH
4 lettersCYST, GYMS, HYMN, LYNX, MYTH, SYNC
3 lettersCRY, DRY, FLY, FRY, GYM, PLY, PRY, SHY, SKY, SLY, SPY, STY, THY, TRY, WHY, WRY
2 lettersBY, MY, SH, HM, MM

The longest common one is RHYTHMS, at seven letters. It is a favourite answer to the trivia question "what is the longest word with no vowels?" (meaning no A, E, I, O or U).

Words with no vowels and no Y

A tiny group uses no vowel letter at all, not even Y. Most are sounds or borrowed words: SHH, HMM, PSST, BRR, TSK, and the Welsh-derived CWM (a steep valley) and CRWTH (an ancient stringed instrument). In those Welsh words, the W acts as the vowel.

How they help in word games

  • Scrabble and Words With Friends: when your rack has no vowels, these words are a lifeline. CRY, FLY, DRY and GYM let you play and draw fresh tiles instead of swapping a whole rack.
  • High-value plays: LYNX and GYM use the valuable X and the K-neighbours; MYTHS and NYMPH spread points nicely.
  • Wordle: if your clues rule out every vowel, the answer is almost certainly one of CRYPT, GLYPH, GYPSY, LYMPH, NYMPH or similar. Knowing the short list wins the game. See our Wordle traps for other tricky patterns.
  • Hangman: a no-vowel word is brutal for the guesser, because the usual first guesses (E, A, O) all miss. See hangman strategy.

Why Y counts

Y is the chameleon of the alphabet: a consonant at the start of a word (YES, YELLOW) but a vowel in the middle or end (GYM, HAPPY, RHYTHM). That double life is what lets these words work without a "real" vowel. For the opposite extreme, see our list of words with all five vowels.
